From Static to Motion

The cinema has been used to place us in the action, not merely to permit us to witness it. —Visual Culture p.214

Transforming from static to motion is always an excited thing. Although the reading in Visual Culture was talking about novel to film, I kinda want to extend this concept all over to the similar idea between graphic and anime. When we read text and images of someones creation, we are always receiving them unidirectionally. While transforming this creation into motion, there are much more subjects can be imported. The editor have more ways to convince their audience for believing the world of this story. While manga have its own way to present motion, anime use the technique to upgrade those scene.

Visual Text in Culture

Visual text is not simply the product of any individual author, but more a ‘fictionalized portrait’ of society at the time a particular text was made. —Visual Culture p.88

Visual text is not just about words. It doesn’t like text which have a clear formula for people to understand what character is for what meaning. The story of “This is not a pipe” strongly relate to the idea of symbol. What is being observed and what is being presented? We ask ourselves about the visual text. And then we try to understand the world for getting closer to the answer.

Create a structure method for looking at the content of a painting. —Visual Culture p.16

The visual process for most images are basically the same. For portrait: we first look at the main person, how’s he looks like, what’s his posture. Second is what are the objects, how they being placed. Third is to scan the scene to realize the whole picture. For map: we first look at the land, how’s it looks like, what’s its feature. Second is what are the objects being shown and being placed on the map, what are they presenting. Third is to view the overall scene and understand what is the map stand for.
